Was it worth bothering?

This quote is taken from the bloody application form that took me about 3 weeks to complete and evidence properly. The problem was my yearly development review has for the last few years been just enough to show that I was competent. To use it as a means to assist an application took considerably longer.

The quote reads:
" We are committed to the employment of people with disabilities and from ethnic minorities. There is a policy of guaranteed shortlisting of those applicants."

I am not disabled and am white British as well as being heterosexual.

Wonder if I will make it to the shortlist.

Towards the end of my service I often wondered if a sex (or sexuality) change, a skin transplant and maybe less of a command of the English language would propel me to greater things. But then I'd stop myself thinking like this for fear of being thought of a closet racist, sexist, homophobic bigot, despite the fact that I delighted in targetting the bullies in our society who made folks lives, from those aformentioned groups, hell. Don't question your sanity CC.C, its the situation thats mad, not you.

You could always try the "lesbian trapped in a man's body" gambit...

Constable Confused.com said...

Merlin,

never thought of that one......will give it a go on the interview if visible and non visible minorities allow to get to the shortlist

Put the application in my name if you like, I'll even turn up for the interview with you!
More seriously, disabled ppl tend not to be too keen on the guaranteed interview scheme either, it's fraught with issues.
Good luck mate, hope you get through to interview stage,

The problem is that the do gooders that invent the laws are the ones that appear to have had a lobotomy.

You'll probably find the interview will be based on your ability as a good all round Police Officer and ability to work in a small unit.Be prepared to evidence it. Do your homework on the unit before hand arange a visit and ask questions ( I'm sure you've already done this)
Best of luck anyway CC

I am sensing a mood of defeatism and negative thinking here C.C.
If something is right for you, then it is worth "bothering" with. And if it does not happen, then clearly it's not meant to be, because destiny has something else in store for you. Something better maybe. Everything happens for a reason, which may not be seen or understood until time has passed.
Try not to worry. Chill please.

But hang on a minute..... negative thinking and worry IS a "disability". Ah well, too late for the application form!

So it's simple - Tick the box and you get a board.

As it's all self defined you can't be challenged .. doesn't say visible ethnic minority, whatever that means.

I always go down as other .. but it comes up as IC5 Chinese on all National promotion stuff ??????

There is a world of difference between "shortlisting" someone and giving them the job. They will surely only ever appoint someone who is actually competent?!

Can you get a wheelchair into a chopper?

If you think it would help I could send a letter of complaint that questioned both your sexual orientation and your lineage.
Of course I'd have to sound like a local and I'm not sure I can type in a bri'ish accent, but I'd be willing to
give it a shot ; )
Good luck.

BTW thank you all for your support. Blue Eyes, yes you can but not in a hurry, was I SO obvious what I was applying for?

Fraid so CC.com.

Constable Confused.com said...

Hawkeye,

EC, that is falling to bits! Literally!

You kind of gave it away when you said you were going "up" in the world. It was either a chopper or a horse ;-)

Anonymous said...

For those who do not know, can you tell us what EC is please?

Constable Confused.com said...

Hello anon @ 03:08,

jargon mate, EC is a Eurocopter and M.D. well I'm not sure but just another type of helicopter. Sorry for any confusion, not being sad by commenting at this hour but just got in when I was meant to finish at midnight.

Still at Lippetts Hill? Or is that a nice big housing estate as well now?

I am absolutely staggered that they can get away with this, legally speaking. Saying you will deliberately advantage certain groups of people just cannot be right.

Also it's extremely patronising to the people mentioned, and all it results in is that disabled/ethnic/whatever people who get jobs because they're good at what they do get looked at with suspicion.

PS. When I was in the RAF there was a guy (an armourer of course) who got a sex change, fully paid for by the RAF of course. It was a scary sight. Anyway, it went for a commission not longer after, it got straight through the selection process because everyone know there was know way the RAF would have the balls(!) to turn it down.

Not sure if it made it through the officer training though...

PPS. Not trying to be offensive by saying 'it', but I really don't know how else to describe the person.

Hello Constable Confused. Thanks for explaining the jargon of EC.
Aspirations for a bit of "high flying" eh? I hope that your best dreams and wishes come true.

But why would I think that you are "sad" for leaving a comment at 4.37am, when I left one a 3.08am, and this one at approx 4am!!!
That doesn't make me "sad", at least I hope that is not the assumption in today's tick box stick a label on everyone culture.
It just makes me a night owl who enjoys reading your blog.

Regards by return mate

You think that's bad? Certain "services" now have the same physical fitness tests for Firearms officers as for general PCs...Grip strength - who needs it! Upper body strength - over-rated! The farce continues...

To say nothing of the bloke that i know for a fact applied to the dogs section of one county, but had a huge fear of large dogs! (and got accepted)

Anonymous said...

Obviously the guy who had the fear of large dogs, was conquering his fears. Have you never heard of "Feel the Fear and do it anyway"?

Hogdayafternoon said...

That last one...tried that once but ended up smelling the fear as well.
